TV Publica

TV Pública, also known as Canal 7, is the eldest TV channel in Argentina. The first TV broadcasting in Argentina was carried out through TV Pública’s signal in 1951. Eva Duarte de Perón was the protagonist of the first broadcasting, which showed the celebrations held on October 17, the Peronist Loyalty Day. Throughout its history, the State-owned channel editorial line has been favorable to the governments in office and has lacked politically-independent contents. In fact, the facilities of TV Pública were built by the last military government to broadcast the 1978 World Cup in color. Rafael Videla’s administration used the World Cup in Argentina as propaganda instrument. Today TV Pública is reducing the number of productions and staff, a strategy that Hernán Lombardi, Director of the Federal System of Media and Public Content, has defined as an austerity plan. In 2018 the channel’s programming included six hours of live shows from Monday to Friday, which were mainly distributed between the channel’s four news bulletins (in 2015 live shows amounted to 10.5 hours). Most of the channel’s programming includes recorded and repeated shows. Open TV audience levels have fallen sharply in recent years, and the State-owned channel saw a 50% audience decline between 2015 and 2017.
